The Therapeutics Research Institute (TRI-institute) is a nonprofit organization conducting research on various aspects of approved drugs, most importantly, what learnings and general lessons can be drawn from these drugs. While significant progress has been made in the introduction of new drugs over the past half a century, it has varied markedly from one disease to another, including the number of approved drugs and pharmacologic classes for individual diseases. During this time period, circa 1,000 new drugs have been approved, and importantly, these include the majority of today’s effective treatments. Significantly, these approved drugs comprise the molecules and the mechanisms of action that have been proven to work. We are also acutely aware of the staggeringly low development success rate, averaging about 5%. Therefore, it is our belief that there are a number of opportunities to learn from the drug development successes – approved drugs – learnings that perhaps may offer some lessons for the future.
